Highline Show Extraschicht

Part 1 by Jonas

Some good friends of ours from Germany, Basti Aldehoff and Claas Lendt invited us help present a highline show at a cultural night in the Ruhr Area, Germany. The night was called “Extraschicht, Die Nacht der Indrustriekultur” (The Night of Industrial Culture). The Ruhr is former Germany’s biggest industrial environment, but almost all industry is closed now.
We were informed that the highline was planned between a 23m high cooling tower and the roof of an old hall – 65-70m long. When we saw the first pictures, we were immediately stoked! Unfortunately Yuri and David couldn’t make the event, so Tom and I travelled to represent the Dreamwalkers in Germany

So far my personal best on highlines was about 55m long. However, we had just received the brand new Marathon webbing from Slacktivity, a lightweight, low stretch, easy walking webbing. So this gave me huge confidence to at least make a crossing!
We went there 5 days in advance to rig the line early enough for the show. Rigging on the cooling tower was quite a challenge, as we couldn’t easily access the rigging point. We had to throw some ropes attached to shackles over the top, attach them to the other side of the tower and climb up. Luckily the cooling tower had good, solid anchors. There was one metal beam that went all the way through the tower and so we attached slings to this beam on the inner and outer side of the cooling tower. Thus, the forces would be equalized and the weblock would remain perfectly in place.

The other side was easy, metal beams everywhere on the roof! However, the walkway to the access point was quite scary, as due to all the rusty metal. They were safe enough, organizer Klaus Borkens, told us. So we just took care walking there…The highline only took about 4-5 hours to rig. Tom, Basti and I all had a short attempt before we left for the day. The line felt comfortable and relaxed. The view towards the cooling tower was great :-)! I was looking forward to session and really play around on the line

The day before the show we returned to have some much better attempts. Tom was super controlled on the line and went for the fullman. For me the line was still quite a challenge. Sometimes I was able to walk 30m and then suddenly I lost my focus and I had to make a catch. Things were working out, but I didn’t have a full crossing under my belt yet!

We were able to stay at the Hahn Family as they lived close to the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. Thanks again for the great hospitality 🙂

The following day we arrived early at 11:00 in the morning. Well, it is early when the show begins at 18:00 ;-). So we still had some practice time on the line before we needed to perform. During one of my attempts I finally managed to the line with only two catches!
I felt great, because it took me almost 2 years to walk and control lines longer than 50m. Especially in the year when I finished my studies (and had no time to train) this caused some disappointments.

18:00. Showtime! We gave 3 Jumpline shows and 3 Highline shows, performing until 23:30. A looong 5 hour demo night! The combination of first Highlining, then immediately running down for a Jumpline show was quite exhausting, but also funny. Highlining with an audience still causes a bit of pressure (even after Holland’s got Talent), but Jumplining on super nice raggae sounds (Ranking dread) only caused some massive jamming! Tom and I aren’t the best trickliners out there, but we definitely know how to give a show and get the audience involved!
The shows were really nice to do; we even experimented with a rodeoline underneath the highline. Tom did some real nice exposures and I had some good attempts and started to become comfortable. At 23:00 we had our last Jumpline show, before we went for a highline session in the dark. You think highlining is already difficult? Try it when you can’t see ANYTHING!
Just seconds before the show I saw these aerial silks (from another performance) hanging 5m from the jumpline. I saw a new option right away. I took the end of the silks to the Jumpline and my plan was to make a huge jump on the jumpline, hold the silks, make a big swing and jump back onto the Jumpline. But… the moment that I stood up, a BIG pain burst shot through my knee. I immediately knew, this isn’t good. And my evening was over 🙁

Part 2 by Tom

Rigging with Jonas and Basti was a fun, but time consuming process that got us all incredibly dirty from being in the old cooling tower. The line itself felt really nice and comfortable. It was also cool to test a new webbing in such a nice setting for the first time! The shows all went well, and I was able to walk the line every time I wanted to with some exposures and bounces during the walk. The transition from highline to trickline and back, 2 times per hour, seemed tough at first. After the relaxed reggae sounds from the first jumpline show, we managed to stay in that vibe for the rest of the night.

Derigging the line however was a completely different story for me, and honestly the most scary experience I’ve ever had. Since the cooling tower was incredibly hard to access, the plan was for me to leash in, slide to the cooling tower with a rope, derig the line and rappel down. Before sliding over, everybody was in place and we went through the plan again. Two minutes later I sat down on the cooling tower, which was about 50 centimeters wide at the rim. My left leg was hanging inside the cooling tower, and my right leg on the outside, with about 20 meters below me. So far so good, and I gave Jonas the sign to detension the highline. At this point, I still had not seen the massive thunderstorm coming from behind.Out of nowhere, a strong gust of wind knocked me down with my chest against the rim of the cooling tower. When I got up and tried to look what happened, I couldn’t see anything around me. One second later, I saw a lightning bolt striking down not too far away from me, and I realised I was in big trouble. The rim of the cooling tower was the highest point around, and I was sitting right on top of it with no fast way to get off. Sliding back was no option, as the line was already detensioned. Already completely soaked, I concluded that staying on the cooling tower to wait out the storm was not an option, and I had to get down as soon as possible. Building a rappel from the rope in my backpack was the best option. However, I could not even see my hands and I was laying down on the rim to shelter myself from the rain and thunder. There were still lightning strikes everywhere around me. I managed to get the rope out my backpack, tie an eight to a shackle, throw the coil down and clip in with my eddy. During this whole process, I could not see what I was doing. The circumstances were everything but ideal to rig something which my life was depending on. Being super exposed in the middle of a thunderstorm, every second was counting, and I made sure I was not spending any unnecessary time on top of the cooling tower. Another quick double-check using only my hands, and I decided everything felt right. I never rappelled down so fast in my life.Feeling solid ground beneath my feet has never been so good. I ran inside to hide from the rain. As soon as I was in a dry space, I just laid down and was unable to speak or react for quite a while. Even though the whole sequence described above only took 1 or 2 minutes, it drained me of all my physical and mental energy. My friends still had no idea what happened, and were relieved to find me down safely.

When rigging and derigging highlines, I try to be as safe as possible and make sure my friends and I are at all times clipped in to a rope. Sometimes, you cannot control all the factors. What you can do, is take all factors into account and plan and prepare accordingly. In this case, we failed to properly assess the weather before going out to a potentially dangerous place. Luckily, it ended well but it was a scary lesson to be learned!

Ropeswing – de tijd van je leven

Published in Highline, Press, Projects, Shows
by Jonas Konijnenberg

In May 2015 we were asked by a Dutch TV produce house to set a ropeswing for a short item about a girl. Her dream was to do once a ropeswing and walk a highline. As we had experience with both, they decided that we were allowed to fix the ropeswing and highline for her. This means that we had our first job where we were asked to fix something for someone else! The ropeswing wasn’t meant for us, but of course for the girl. This was one of our first opportunities to make a real dream become reality 🙂 The show is called “De tijd van je leven”, which means: the time of your life.

First day

Finally. We arrived at the spot at about 10 in the morning on the first day. Dropping off 125kg of gear at a newly agreed meeting point after which we went looking for the anchors. Three days of rigging, testing and derigging in the 32 degree sun were ahead of us, and we were stoked.
Quickly we found the anchors of the short highline and the ropeswing highline. The short highline was 28 meters long and easy to rig. The ropeswing highline was about 85 meters long, and 15 meters (!) off leveled. Quite bit harder to rig and the most important line, so we started on that one.
Everything went smoothly and we established the big line in about 5 hours, after which we took a small break in the shade to cool off and energize ourselves to rig the smaller line. We didn’t rig the ropeswing on the 85m line yet, because we were pretty sure we had enough time to give the big line a try the next morning. Also the small line was done within no-time (except for a little throwline-error ;)), and at around 18:00 we went back to the hotel after a successful day of rigging. Tomorrow walking time!

Second day

I sat on the lower part of the big line. It was a weird experience, being in the beginning of a line, and bending your neck just to see the anchor. As soon as I stood up my eyes went straight ahead and I just focused on the line. After a couple of steps I fell. Back into chongo, and.. Wow, the line was already going up! Chongo would get harder and harder! Just don’t fall smile-emoticon
At about half the line I fell again. Chongo was hard, but still doable. Reaching the end was a weird experience. It was so steep, that I almost slipped backwards. Since the line wasn’t very tensioned yet, it was about to hit the rocks, so I just went down. After some bouncy fun in the middle, we decided it was time to rig the ropeswing. We would still have to test it, and the next day was d-day!
I went to the middle of the line to do some improvisatory rigging. With some prussiks and tape to keep everything in place it was all fixed and ready to go. I brought the ropes back to the side, Jonas made an 80kg haulbag full of stones ready to be thrown off the cliff, and then it was time. The first test. Tom and I were keeping an eye on the anchors, which I tried to blindly film the fall of the haulbag.
“3… 2… 1… Komt ‘ie!”. The haulbag fell, and… There was barely any sound. The anchors didn’t move an inch, and the haulbag was slowly swinging 35 meters below the line. Success! Getting the haulbag back up took us quite a lot of time, considering it doesn’t have any arms to keep the ropes from twisting. Therefore it was already late when we got everything ready for the next jump, so we decided to let only Jonas jump the next day before Karen would be the lucky one.

Third and last day

We went to the lines at 9:30 in the morning on the last day to do some final checks before the filmcrew arrived. Everything was ready. Even though everything was 200% safe and thought through, we were still a bit nervous. But… Better nervous than careless!
At 11:30 the filmcrew arrived and the show got started. After some funny fake “meetings” it was time to get started. Jonas would jump first. I was by his side, encouraging him. 3, 2, 1, JUMP!!! Without any doubt he threw himself in the abyss. A few seconds later; a dull sound of the ropes catching him as smoothly as possible. A few high pitched man screams later, Tom and I were hauling him back up, and after arriving back to the middle of the line, he pulled himself to safety. Then the moment we’ve been waiting for. Karen was going to jump!
Tom was waiting at the top anchor to go on the line to get Karen off, Jonas at the bottom to pull her up, and me by her side, tieing her into the ropes. The ropes were ready, the filmcrew was ready, and Karen was ready. We would do a countdown from five, she was sure about jumping, and not even breaking a sweat. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, JUMP!!!
And there she went. No hesitation. Fully trusting our judgment. 30 minutes later we got her back on the side, and after some necessary ‘reaction filming’ it was done. Everything went so smoothly!
No more highline for Karen, since they had to go to the airport to catch their flight. We said our goodbyes, as soon as the TV crew left we hugged each other and we were so proud of ourselfs.
Three days of hard work all came together in that one, single jump. All the preparations were totally worth it, as everything in the Jump of Karen went without problems. We were also really happy with the fact that we made a real dream come true; Karen had an awesome experience with the ropeswing and we had made this possible 🙂

We started derigging. I looked on my phone and… A message from our good friend Guillaume: “I’ll see you in 5 minutes!”. And there he was, 5 minutes later! After all the small highline wasn’t rigged for nothing. He went to have a quick session on it while we derigged the big line, and after that also the small line. 125Kg of gear back in all the backpacks, and we were ready to go home!
PS: Thanks Guillaume for all the great work you did in getting permission for us and finding the spot!

We expect the video of the programm soon to be published. For now we just have the session video of Yuri!

Istanbul highline trip

In a small car crammed with camping gear, two heavy weight highline rigs and space for 2 people. There were five of us. Things got interesting. Real interesting. Pretty much a masterclass in Tetris multiplied by Twister. We wound our way out of Istanbul at 10pm to camp at the highline spot. The best thing about arriving at midnight is that the beauty of the rocks and landscape will refreshingly welcome you the next morning when you wake up after a great night of sleep. The morning sun painted the rocks and landscape, filling in the blanks left by descriptions and photos I had already seen.

DSC_0002

This is the beautiful gap that Can had so excitingly told me about. It would be approximately 135 meters he said, and we would rig it with dragon and 10,5mm rope backup. During breakfast I couldn’t keep my eyes off the gap, while the others were slowly preparing. I was ready. I was excited. Too excited! STOKE!!!

IMG_0673

We brought the webbing (ever so kindly sponsored by our friend Sinan!) in between the two rock faces, Nuri and I walked up on one side, made the anchor (all natural) threw a rope down and attatched the first end of the webbing. Then Can bravely walked the webbing to the other side of the river (while keeping it dry!!) and we did the same for the other side. Everything went flawlessly (except for forgetting to put the leash on the line. Standard practice) and we were done rigging within 3,5 hours! It was time for some lunch, to get ready for some long heavy goodness!

DSC_0005

We knew the wind would make it pretty hard, but didn’t expect the how much and powerfully the gusts would vary. I got up on the beginning of the line and a gust blew the line 5 meters sideways. I stood up, put a few steps, and the wind stopped for a moment. The line went all the way back and I lost my focus. I caught. This happened a few times and I also tried in the middle. I couldn’t hear anything around me except for rapidly blowing wind. It was a hugely powerful feeling. I slid to the other side and back to get some protection off the line that was necessary during the rigging (thanks for your sweater Nuri 🙂 ) and was drained. Tomorrow I will try again…

DSC_0075

When I got on the line the next day, I quickly noticed that it was saggier than yesterday and rather unleveled (later we found out the base camp-side was about 5m higher). Combined with the sag, and brand new dragon webbing the first 20 meters felt really strange. My shakes didn’t really reach the end due to the sag, but every step felt like I missed a step on some stairs. It was a lot lower than I was used to. I walked the first 20 meters on my first try, and got across with a few catches. This was the same for the way back. The incline and slipperiness were both pretty severe, so the last 5 meters I kind of had to shove my feet forward instead of actually walking. So far it went well! I made three more crossings and called it a day. Tomorrow I will try again…

DSC_0027

The next day I wanted to try it with a bit more tension. I put one hangover on, and Nuri tensioned it as much as he could, while of course sitting in a really awkward position. With about 8-10m of sag left, I went on the line. I stood up, went in to a surf, catch. Repeat. And again. I got frustrated. I decided just to push through (is what you always should do). I stood up and walked the first 40m. It was ok, the next part should be a lot easier now. I stood up and walked the rest of the line without catches. It was quite the fight, but it felt good! Time to try for the return send. A few catches with not more than 2 steps. I closed my eyes and focused. Don’t get angry, don’t get angry, just focus, I repeatedly told myself. I stood up, and walked the first 50 meters. I took a misstep and fell. I got really angry, but said to myself “then walk it with just 1 catch”. It didn’t work and I walked the rest of the line with about 3 catches. I got mad (as usual) and pushed too hard. When I got to the end I forced out a smile and looked at the camera. You know, because the team shirt is that cool.

And here’s my forced smile:

DSC_0185

I got off the line, and they congratulated me. I didn’t accept it because I didn’t send it. Then they said, “but you got across with one catch!”. One catch? Oh yeah, one catch. I got so obsessed with sending it on the way back, that I totally forgot that the way there was just with one catch. I cheered up a bit, and was thinking about going again. Unfortunately I was way too drained for another good try, so I slid to the middle of the line, and bounced the living shit out of it 🙂

Video coming soon!! 🙂

That morning just before we went up the cliff, the waiter of the camping restaurant gave us a huge banner, and he politely asked us if we could maybe hang this on the highline for a quick picture. Of course, the Dutchie that I am, I asked: “in exchange for?”. About this he was kind of vague, and said something like “free beer or dinner or something”. To derig the line, Nuri had to get to the other side, so he took the banner with him, we made a cool picture, and derigged the line. With the huge profits we could afford a couple beers and food, a delicious sell out 😛

Jonas slacklining in 2014

Published in blog
by Jonas Konijnenberg

Jonas Konijnenberg 2014

2014 already sounds like a year ago. But my memories are still fresh. Last year a lot of things I’ve achieved which made me proud. I would like to share some of these activities with you.
This video contains a lot of footage from the last year. For the story behind the movie; read the following stories:

Indoor trainings Amsterdam

After 2 years of lobbying and attempts to take slacklining indoor in Amsterdam, finally I’ve got my own group of slackline ‘students’. I learned them to slackline, but more important I showed them how to play. The lessons are still going on and they rock!

Pushing my limits on long- and highlines

In 2014 I started practising longline more and more. After a couple of sessions I broke the 100m barrier. I felt super stoked after this step and kept on training on double lines and heavy webbings. Let’s see what 2015 will bring me for nice lengths 🙂
The highlines longer than 40m were still quite a challenge, but during the end of the summer everything underneath this length I onsighted 🙂 In 2015 I definetely want to break the 50m barrier.

Highline shows

Ooh, a real dream came true in 2014. We, as Dreamwalkers, did some four really nice highline shows.
The first show I did was the Holland’s got talent highline. Big spotlights, a blown up circus and hilarious comments; it was a good experience, but still I prefer nature for highlines 😉
Mundial festival was the first show were we acted as team Dreamwalkers. The perfect hall for a show, with two highlines set we were able to show everyone one the festival what our passion is. Later the hall became our training location.

Moen was out biggest show so far. We built a highline from a crane to the church. Super scary, because the crane was constantly moving. But, walking towards the crane gave you a beautifull look over the city!

The last show of the year was in a climbing show, during the National Champioships lead climbing. We had fun during the day together as a team, during the evening we performed and had even more fun! It was nice to show these climbers our outdoor activity, as they understood the difficulty.
The show was super strong; when someone was ready with his short act on the line, the next one started immediately as we had two leashes.

Streetkicks; organizing a slackline contest

In August I organized as Slacktivity a jumpline contest during Antwerp Street Kicks. Street Kicks is an event for extreme sports in the city of Antwerp. During the contest there were constantly 200-300 people looking at the slackline. The slackline had a perfect length; around 21 m and a real nice winner; Floris Verbiest. He showed us his talent on the slackline, I am curious what he will throw down in 2015… Double buttflips?
It made me happy to give starting slackliners a podium to show their tricks to an audience.

Organizing an indoor slackline Jam

We organized the first national indoor slackline jam in the Netherlands. We gave some workshops in highline skills, like leash climbing and line-ups. In total there were around 90 persons. The day gave me the perfect mood; I was so relaxed because everyone was having fun. No stress at all!

Thanks for reading! In case you’re interested in my last year’s video…

100m Highline ‘Feuilles d’Automne’

Published in blog, Highline, Projects
by Jonas Konijnenberg

By Yuri Rhodenborgh

The idea: a line we definitely couldn’t walk, somewhere around the Gueuroz bridge in southern Switzerland. What could be better training?

It’s always strange to drive right up to the spot where you will be highlining, because you normally need to hike for a long time with a heavy backpack. Guillaume, Remy and I got arrived at the bridge by car and went over our plan. We had already discussed that we would try to rig the longest line possible under the bridge, so we used Sam’s 105m Core2LS piece, and laid it out along the bridge, to tape it together with Remy’s Sonic 2.0 and checked the length of our project. 100m. Not a meter shorter. Perfect!

Immediately we started rigging. Everyone knew what to do. That’s the best thing about highlining with experienced people. Everything goes ten times faster! After some fun bridge climbing and mini-rig-ropeswing it was rigged. I had just installed the backup on the far-side and went out to highslide to the other side, where Guillaume, Remy and the leash were, to get ready for some heavy, loose highlining. I clipped in with my HangOver and gave the line a big tug, which shot me forward, out over the abyss. The moment I passed over the relative safety of the trees, a gap of 150m of direct exposure opened beneath me. It was unlike anything I had ever felt before. It definitely did not look this exposed from beside the line! I took a moment to enjoy the view, and then went over to the other side.

Guillaume went out first, and I think he had the same experience as I did. ‘Let’s check my knot once again’, he said, with a nervous smile. Then he stood up, and walked. The line was so calm, as were his movements. He got to the other side and back in no time. It looked incredible! He said it was way easier then he expected and above all… totally sendable! Being a natural skeptic, I went on the line without expecting too much from it. I stood up, and strangely enough, the line was incredibly controllable! I walked until halfway with a few catches , and then to the end without any catches. It WAS possible!

Guillaume was the first one to send it on his fourth crossing. Immediately after him I sent it on my second crossing, and after that Remy also on his fourth. We sat there, staring at the barely tensioned line (50-100kg of tension, at least 2m of sag without anyone on it) in disbelief. Did everyone really just send this line like it was nothing? At that moment the sun broke though (spoiler: corniness on the way) and some autumn leaves drifted past on the wind. Guillaume decided to name the line after this moment ‘Feuilles d’Automne’ which means literally ‘Autumn Leaves’ in English. An unforgettable moment in time. A big thanks to Remy, Guillaume, and Sam for making this all happen (so smoothly)!

Morning Glory

Published in blog, Highline, Projects

Location: Undisclosed Time: 6.30 – 8.30 Line name: Morning glory Length of the line: 23m Text by Jonas In summer Tom and I spotted this location and we thought: ‘Wow, this is a perfect location to set a highline!’ But, the location was quite a tourist hotspot and the police are pretty strict in this area. So we decided to postpone this awesome project to a moment where we were really motivated to start rigging early. Peter Soetewey made these beautiful pictures. See http://www.petersoetewey.be/ for more awesome work of him.

In summer Tom and I spotted this location and thought: ‘Wow, this is a perfect location to set a highline!’ But, the location was quite a tourist hotspot and the police are pretty strict in this area. So we decided to postpone this awesome project to a moment where we were really motivated to start rigging early. So, some months went by until…

The evening before the project Tom, David and I were discussing the plan. Yuri couldn’t make it unfortunately, due to his study. We decided to start rigging early and go away before the day was started, because we didn’t want to be sent away.

At six o clock in the morning my alarm went off. So, so early for a Sunday morning! I woke up the rest of the guys (not easy) and we went to the spot. We had already divided up the gear for each side into separate backpacks and pretaped the line so we we able to rig really fast. We were almost finished within 30 minutes, but David spotted a misaligned shackle. It was difficult to realign, because there was already a bit of tension on the line. At that moment our mission was in danger, de-tensioning meant we almost had to start over again. But with all of us, a hangover and a linegrip we were able to release the tension of the shackle and placed it correctly 🙂

When the sun rose I had the honour of the first attempt. I stood up and immediately felt super confident on the line. The walk towards the other side was short, but I enjoyed every moment! Halfway I started to smile, because I realised that we fulfilled our mission of the morning. Getting up so early with a dreamy mission is a really nice start of your Sunday. Especially when you’re already dreaming a couple of months about a project!

Tom and David also had an awesome time on the line. David was walking so solid in his green flashy leggings. But when he walked back on his second full man a harbour boat sailed really close by. We realised that we were being spotted, took all the gear within 5 minutes down. We drove happily away and to a nice café for breakfast. When we arrived we high fived each other and went eating Sunday morning breakfast with croissants!

LONGline training – double 185m

At the end of September, and the beginning of October, Tom and Yuri got 500 meters of heavy webbing to their disposal to train their longlining skills to the extremes.
Tuesday morning, 23rd of September; it’s time! Time to get up early, carry 45kg of longlining gear to Leijpark, Tilburg, shut mind off the mind, and train. 185 meters of double webbing was the mission of the day. It took us about one hour to set the line up, and then it was play-time.Report by Yuri

Tuesday morning, 23rd of September; It’s time! Time to get up early, carry 45kg of longlining gear to Leijpark, Tilburg, clear the mind and train. 185 meters of double webbing (more than twice as hard as a 185m line, so comparable to a 450m normal line!!) was the mission of the day.
It took us about one hour to set the line up and then it was play-time.Standing next to the line and giving it a big shake, I saw the vibration traveling to the other side and back, giving me a huge slapback. It was rather intimidating seeing (and feeling) the huge and powerful dynamics of this line. It weighs about 30kg in total. These 30kg you then have to control, with just your arms and core.

I climbed up to the line (since it was 4 meters high), sat, got mentally ready, and stood up. First it’s like standing on a soft fence. You take two steps, and suddenly the whole fence starts to move. You try to stabilize by sending a control-shake, so that it would stop moving sideways. The shakes come back, it’s too heavy to hold, it starts oscillating more, and…

BOOM!!! Suddenly you’re hanging under the line.

The beginning and the end of lines like these are the hardest. Heavy oscillations that don’t stop, because you have no room to move, but everything in front of you is moving and at the same time you’re 4 meters of the ground. This makes finally getting to a quarter feel very rewarding and safe. And then.. It’s time for sore muscles!Since it’s only the second time we rigged this huge line, you start to value the moments of complete balance and rest. Walking without shakes, without sideway movements, without any movements, but the slow controlled steps you take and the air you deeply inhalate. Then comes the moment you give a shake. Everything around you starts to move, the balance is gone, and the fight starts again. The shakes are so heavy, you have to clench your lower back to stay on the line no matter what. Then it becomes quiet again. Two steps. Repeat.

After a session like this (four crossings of the entire line in total) you are totally drained, physically as much as mentally. The lower back and shoulders hurt, tiredness takes over, and you think about the wonderful bed that awaits you when you get home. This feeling of being totally empty is also a feeling of content for me. I have done everything I can today. Tomorrow however, is another day.

Highline show @ Moen

On the weekend of 21 & 22 september the Dream Walkers gave a highline show in Moen, Belgium. Kenny Belaey and Viki Gomez (both World Champion Trial bike/flatland BMX) Text underneath by David. Video by Jonas

Travel, friends, adventure. All the right ingredients for an epic weekend. The whole Dream Walkers team had a highline show in Moen, Belgium. Church plus crane is some highline maths we love! So, I got up at 6am on Saturday morning, drove from Rotterdam to Tilburg to pick up Yuri and meet Tom and Jonas. Also, to go over gear one last time and drive down to Belgium together, in a little team convoy. Highline time!

Two hours later we arrived at Moen in Belgium, in good spirits. We greeted the festival organisers and went directly up into the church. Going into a bell tower was something I had always wanted to do, so quite exciting to see the old wood and bells. However, a few hours later, during the rigging, when the bells rang for a wedding, deafening us, my enthusiasm faded somewhat…

After looking around and checking the structural rigging points, we brought up all the gear, pre-taped the lines, slung beams with slings and padded all the points where any rubbing would or could occur. Rigging is a really fun process, bringing all the team together, all working out the best way to do things, many, many jokes and laughs. If only I could repeat some of the jokes here…

Basic rigging completed, Tom and Yuri went down to the crane, supervised the final positioning and height coordinating of the crane with Jonas and I. Really great fun to be in charge of a big machine. They also arranged for the placement of three, 1t concrete blocks, to provide anchoring for the crane and suitable backup to stop it from wobbling.

After everything was setup, we doubled checked the rigging, double-checked each point and made sure everything was padded and safe. This is a very important step, to make sure that everything is safe and that we have not missed anything. Then we tested out the setup, with a walk. Handily, there were about 400 people running around the village dressed as devils, so a nice crowd. Of course, it was a nice contrast to walk towards the church and have devils running around underneath. We practiced our routine, got the feeling for the line and enjoyed the view.
So amazing, to look out over the village, from such a unique viewpoint and to be able to highline from there. Well, these are the unique moments in life you will always remember, shared with friends. It is for these moments that we love highlining

As it was getting dark, we decided to head to the hotel. The organisers had booked us a hotel room just outside Moen, which was simply amazing. Normally, when we are highlining, we are camping or sleeping somewhere not particularly comfortable. In Moen, we had a huge hot shower, beds and the next morning a huge buffet breakfast. Such a great team experience and great preparation for the show.

Sunday morning, waking up after a great sleep. We arrived back in Moen and straight away double checked every point of the rigging, checked the line, double-checked all possible abrasion points. Safety is our number one concern and we only rig and walk safe lines. Our life is on the line, after all.

We then met Kenny Belaey and Viki Gomez, which was inspirational. They make a living from pursuing their passion, pushing the limits in their sports. They travel the world, competing and showing their skills to thousands and thousands of people each year.
Kenny Belay is a world champion trial biker, he uses a modified mountain bike to hop and jump over all kinds of obstacles and it is amazing to see him perform.
Viki Gomez competes with the world’s best, in BMX flatlands, which is using a modified BMX to do many amazing tricks like riding a BMX like a unicycle , front wheel monos, backwards and more.
We went to lunch with them and they are super relaxed and very friendly. It is quite interesting to talk with people who are successfully pursuing their dreams. I am looking forward to the next time we can work together.

Tom and Jonas opened the show with an amazing trickline performance which really wowed the audience. They really engaged with the audience, got people lying under lines whilst doing tricks over the top and getting the crowd pumped for the Kenny and Viki’s shows. I think that no one there had ever seen slacklining before and to see a few guys who had been doing it for years giving the a top show was a perfect introduction.

All of a sudden, our highline show time arrived! The show plan was us walking and performing for two to three minutes and then Kenny and Viki performing, then us again. Really fast changes and no wasted time at! I was tied in, when suddenly I heard my name being announced over the speakers, by the MC, Denis Herman.
Time to go! I got out, got the start cheering and before I attempted to stand. I was quite nervous, with every one watching. So, I tried to stand up….. and made it! Feeling really great now, I walked out to the middle, balanced on one leg, then danced a little on the line in time to the music, having a lot of fun. I ended up doing a short exposure turn, sat on the line thanked the crowd and slid back to the start, using a Hangover (a line slide to helo you move fast along the slackline)
Then Tom headed out onto the line, showing the crowd how easily it can be to walk the line, showing great control. He didn’t have more time, so he calmly sat down on the line, 15m over the trial bike course, and clipped in, sliding back with a smile on his face!
Jonas followed up, with a show all about interacting with the audience. He had three paper airplanes which he threw down to the audience, hung upside down and showed the crowd his gymnastic abilities.
Yuri closed the show, with a spectacular blindfolded walk. He walked really calmly to the end and sat down, no shaking at all, a solid walk! Ending up with a one arm hang, he clipped in and slid back, a great end to a great show.

It was a marvelous show, we all had a lot of fun putting on a show for Moen! It is nice feeling giving so many people smiles. We aim to inspire people into pushing themselves and doing amazing things. We are already busy planning the next event and hope to get more people interested in highlining and slacklining!

Holland’s Got Talent Highline

So, a couple of months ago my girlfriend encouraged me to participate in Holland’s got Talent. I wasn’t so motivated in the beginning, but it seemed like a nice challenge after some previous experiences with television and demonstrations. First, it was my plan to make a trickline show, as tricklining is much more spectacular for people who are not familiar with the difficulty of a highline.A couple of days before the recordings of the show the HGT staff called and informed me that they had a perfect highline possibility inside the theatre, above the audience and judges. A highline show is a bit of a risk when it comes to creating a successful show, but it was the ultimate challenge to see if my nerves would hold in front of an audience and 10 cameras! My show was planned in the afternoon around dinner time. Tom Peek and Cor Vinke helped me with rigging the highline in the theatre. We only had 1 hour to rig and test the highline. On both sides we had to fix a rappel to get to the anchor points, which is difficult.

It was super stressful to rig the line, because there was a super thin area where the slings had to fit through. After 50 minutes we managed to complete the setup. I leashed in and took some steps. In the middle I had to test with a big leash fall to check that it was at a safe height. I had some tries and began to enjoy the line. The location was perfect, an indoor theatre highline! I never thought this would be possible, a dream come true :)Right at the moment when I wanted to take a rest, the head chief of the show wanted a final rehearsal. I already was totally sweaty because of the spotlights that were all pointing at me. But it was a good idea to make a full test run. During the test run I found out that the startup should be a bit faster, I also found out on which spot I had to make my tricks to be perfectly positioned above the judges. People were waiting to get into the theatre, so we had a short rest and prepared for the real show.
The show started with an introduction of myself and my act on stage. Judges were astonished about the idea that I was planning to walk over the slackline. I went up to the balcony, rapelled down and leashed in. The music started and my act had begun! Walking with the whole crowed and in front of a lot of cameras was challenging, falling was not an option because that would be the end of my act….. But I really liked the idea that everyone was watching me while I was having fun on a highline! So I stayed quite calm and made it easily to the spot were I planned to do static tricks. All my statics went pretty good and I heard that my two minutes of show were almost to an end. I rushed to go hanging on my toes above Gordon, one of the judges. The music stopped and I dropped myself from my toes into my leash. I heard some small screams from the audience and realised I brought my act to an good end!The judges were a bit critical, as they couldn’t understand the difficulty of a highline, but they seemed to like me and so I made it to the next round!
