Travel, friends, adventure. All the right ingredients for an epic weekend. The whole Dream Walkers team had a highline show in Moen, Belgium. Church plus crane is some highline maths we love! So, I got up at 6am on Saturday morning, drove from Rotterdam to Tilburg to pick up Yuri and meet Tom and Jonas. Also, to go over gear one last time and drive down to Belgium together, in a little team convoy. Highline time!

Two hours later we arrived at Moen in Belgium, in good spirits. We greeted the festival organisers and went directly up into the church. Going into a bell tower was something I had always wanted to do, so quite exciting to see the old wood and bells. However, a few hours later, during the rigging, when the bells rang for a wedding, deafening us, my enthusiasm faded somewhat…

After looking around and checking the structural rigging points, we brought up all the gear, pre-taped the lines, slung beams with slings and padded all the points where any rubbing would or could occur. Rigging is a really fun process, bringing all the team together, all working out the best way to do things, many, many jokes and laughs. If only I could repeat some of the jokes here…

Basic rigging completed, Tom and Yuri went down to the crane, supervised the final positioning and height coordinating of the crane with Jonas and I. Really great fun to be in charge of a big machine. They also arranged for the placement of three, 1t concrete blocks, to provide anchoring for the crane and suitable backup to stop it from wobbling.

After everything was setup, we doubled checked the rigging, double-checked each point and made sure everything was padded and safe. This is a very important step, to make sure that everything is safe and that we have not missed anything. Then we tested out the setup, with a walk. Handily, there were about 400 people running around the village dressed as devils, so a nice crowd. Of course, it was a nice contrast to walk towards the church and have devils running around underneath. We practiced our routine, got the feeling for the line and enjoyed the view.
So amazing, to look out over the village, from such a unique viewpoint and to be able to highline from there. Well, these are the unique moments in life you will always remember, shared with friends. It is for these moments that we love highlining

As it was getting dark, we decided to head to the hotel. The organisers had booked us a hotel room just outside Moen, which was simply amazing. Normally, when we are highlining, we are camping or sleeping somewhere not particularly comfortable. In Moen, we had a huge hot shower, beds and the next morning a huge buffet breakfast. Such a great team experience and great preparation for the show.

Sunday morning, waking up after a great sleep. We arrived back in Moen and straight away double checked every point of the rigging, checked the line, double-checked all possible abrasion points. Safety is our number one concern and we only rig and walk safe lines. Our life is on the line, after all.

We then met Kenny Belaey and Viki Gomez, which was inspirational. They make a living from pursuing their passion, pushing the limits in their sports. They travel the world, competing and showing their skills to thousands and thousands of people each year.
Kenny Belay is a world champion trial biker, he uses a modified mountain bike to hop and jump over all kinds of obstacles and it is amazing to see him perform.
Viki Gomez competes with the world’s best, in BMX flatlands, which is using a modified BMX to do many amazing tricks like riding a BMX like a unicycle , front wheel monos, backwards and more.
We went to lunch with them and they are super relaxed and very friendly. It is quite interesting to talk with people who are successfully pursuing their dreams. I am looking forward to the next time we can work together.

Tom and Jonas opened the show with an amazing trickline performance which really wowed the audience. They really engaged with the audience, got people lying under lines whilst doing tricks over the top and getting the crowd pumped for the Kenny and Viki’s shows. I think that no one there had ever seen slacklining before and to see a few guys who had been doing it for years giving the a top show was a perfect introduction.

All of a sudden, our highline show time arrived! The show plan was us walking and performing for two to three minutes and then Kenny and Viki performing, then us again. Really fast changes and no wasted time at! I was tied in, when suddenly I heard my name being announced over the speakers, by the MC, Denis Herman.
Time to go! I got out, got the start cheering and before I attempted to stand. I was quite nervous, with every one watching. So, I tried to stand up….. and made it! Feeling really great now, I walked out to the middle, balanced on one leg, then danced a little on the line in time to the music, having a lot of fun. I ended up doing a short exposure turn, sat on the line thanked the crowd and slid back to the start, using a Hangover (a line slide to helo you move fast along the slackline)
Then Tom headed out onto the line, showing the crowd how easily it can be to walk the line, showing great control. He didn’t have more time, so he calmly sat down on the line, 15m over the trial bike course, and clipped in, sliding back with a smile on his face!
Jonas followed up, with a show all about interacting with the audience. He had three paper airplanes which he threw down to the audience, hung upside down and showed the crowd his gymnastic abilities.
Yuri closed the show, with a spectacular blindfolded walk. He walked really calmly to the end and sat down, no shaking at all, a solid walk! Ending up with a one arm hang, he clipped in and slid back, a great end to a great show.

It was a marvelous show, we all had a lot of fun putting on a show for Moen! It is nice feeling giving so many people smiles. We aim to inspire people into pushing themselves and doing amazing things. We are already busy planning the next event and hope to get more people interested in highlining and slacklining!

Holland's Got Talent slackline

Holland’s Got Talent Highline

So, a couple of months ago my girlfriend encouraged me to participate in Holland’s got Talent. I wasn’t so motivated in the beginning, but it seemed like a nice challenge after some previous experiences with television and demonstrations. First, it was my plan to make a trickline show, as tricklining is much more spectacular for people who are not familiar with the difficulty of a highline.A couple of days before the recordings of the show the HGT staff called and informed me that they had a perfect highline possibility inside the theatre, above the audience and judges. A highline show is a bit of a risk when it comes to creating a successful show, but it was the ultimate challenge to see if my nerves would hold in front of an audience and 10 cameras! My show was planned in the afternoon around dinner time. Tom Peek and Cor Vinke helped me with rigging the highline in the theatre. We only had 1 hour to rig and test the highline. On both sides we had to fix a rappel to get to the anchor points, which is difficult.

It was super stressful to rig the line, because there was a super thin area where the slings had to fit through. After 50 minutes we managed to complete the setup. I leashed in and took some steps. In the middle I had to test with a big leash fall to check that it was at a safe height. I had some tries and began to enjoy the line. The location was perfect, an indoor theatre highline! I never thought this would be possible, a dream come true :)Right at the moment when I wanted to take a rest, the head chief of the show wanted a final rehearsal. I already was totally sweaty because of the spotlights that were all pointing at me. But it was a good idea to make a full test run. During the test run I found out that the startup should be a bit faster, I also found out on which spot I had to make my tricks to be perfectly positioned above the judges. People were waiting to get into the theatre, so we had a short rest and prepared for the real show.
The show started with an introduction of myself and my act on stage. Judges were astonished about the idea that I was planning to walk over the slackline. I went up to the balcony, rapelled down and leashed in. The music started and my act had begun! Walking with the whole crowed and in front of a lot of cameras was challenging, falling was not an option because that would be the end of my act….. But I really liked the idea that everyone was watching me while I was having fun on a highline! So I stayed quite calm and made it easily to the spot were I planned to do static tricks. All my statics went pretty good and I heard that my two minutes of show were almost to an end. I rushed to go hanging on my toes above Gordon, one of the judges. The music stopped and I dropped myself from my toes into my leash. I heard some small screams from the audience and realised I brought my act to an good end!The judges were a bit critical, as they couldn’t understand the difficulty of a highline, but they seemed to like me and so I made it to the next round!

Urban Highline in Amsterdam

Urban Highline in Amsterdam

Urban Highline in Amsterdam
In July 2014 Dream Walkers athletes Tom Peek and Jonas Konijnenberg established a new highline in the Netherlands, Amsterdam. The lines were set up between two formal offices. They were named after the street name where the buildings are placed combined with their length.
Wild-35 and Wild-55Report underneath by Tom Peek
When Jonas told me he had a friend living in an old office building that was perfect to rig highlines from, my eyes got bigger and we instantly drove over to the place to check it out. At the first sight, I got excited immediately! The place had opportunities for lines between 35 and 60 meters, and the lines were not visible from any surrounding roads. It wasn’t until 2 months later that we finally had time to return, but it was worth the wait. Rigging is a total cruise there, as you can just walk to the pillars on the roof on both sides and make an easy connection on the street underneath. We decided to rig the shortest possible length, which was 35 meters, with double Redtube from Slacktivity. After a lazy tensioning attempt with a linegrip and hangover, I decided to go and try the line.I didn’t prepare myself much mentally as I thought 35 meters would be an easy cruise, even at such low tension. After standing up and taking the first two steps I found myself shaking more than I was used to. The whole walk, I couldn’t really relax and get comfortable. On the other side I took a few minutes to inspect the rig again, catch my breath and focus a bit more. The way back however, was not any easier. Even though I could walk the line both ways on my first try without getting close to falling, it wasn’t easy. Jonas also struggled a bit, and needed a few tries before finally sending. We came to the conclusion that the Redtube is the hardest webbing to walk on that we have tried so far. The shakes are really violent, heavy and powerful. Even the slightest mistake can throw you off. Not what I was expecting at this length, but it’s nice to be challenged even on the shorter lines!
We decided to play around a bit more on the line, but take it fairly easy and come back the next day to rig the bigger line. We were a bit limited in length due to the piece of webbing we had available, but we still managed to put up a 55 meter highline on double Bluewing perpendicular to the shorter one. The rigging again went super fast, and I found myself really eager to leash in on the longest highline ever rigged in the Netherlands. I put on my favorite highline song in my ears, Anthem by Emancipator, scooted out and stood up. It was surprisingly easy and I walked to the other side without any problems. Without taking time to catch my breath I instantly went back on the line to walk to the other side. It was such an easy line compared to the shorter one, and I took all my time to enjoy it. Unfortunately, I was the only one able to send the longer line. Jonas gave it some good tries but didn’t get any further than a third of the line. The second day, the shorter line still remained as challenging as the first. We got company from a few Amsterdam slackliners that had their first tries on highlines and they all pushed the limits in their own way. Thanks to Steven, Soraya, Arno, Martin and Pim for keeping us company on the rooftops and making sure everything we did was done in the safest way possible! A special thank you goes out to Eelco, who opened up his house to us and allowed us to highline there.

Highline Show @ Mundial Festival 2014

A few months after coming up with the idea of Dream Walkers, we were facing our first highline show as a team. It was really fitting that this show was happening in Tilburg, the home of Yuri and I. Also the first place we had our first team meeting.Festival Mundial seemed like the perfect festival to start off with for us. Famous for the always impressive line-up of artists from all genres, good food and culture, and the recently new urban location in the Spoorzone it seemed like a no-brainer to try and do a highline show at Mundial. We had our entrance through Loïs de Jong, organizer of the Fusion Jam at Mundial and a slackline enthusiast. After some friendly conversation we got invited to check out the LOC-loods, the venue for the Fusion Jam, the Monday before the festival. It was better than we could have dreamed of! Endless possibilities for highlines, easy access and the most bomb-proof anchor points. A few hours later, two new highlines were established!
We rigged a 30m high tension double Redtube line designed to trick on, and a 38m double core 2 line quite loose, for a nice challenge. We were allowed to leave the highlines up from Monday until the Saturday of the shows and come in everyday to get comfortable with the venue and the lines. On Saturday morning, the Fusion Jam started. It was a grand spectacle with multiple disciplines of BMX, freerunning and beginner slacklines and tricklines by Slacktivity. We realized soon, that two hours later we would be balancing above it all to entertain the people. We were a bit nervous for the first show, but as soon as we were on the lines we experienced the same state of calmness as always. Yuri started on the longer line, while I went on to the shorter one. After some exposure turns and bounces Yuri and me both got off. . I leashed in on the longer one, while Jonas prepared for his show on the 30 meter line.
Jonas wowed the crowd with all kinds of static and acrobatic tricks, while I calmly walked the longer line and layed down in the middle to relax. A few minutes later we all got off the lines and high fived each other: our first show was done and it went great! We had a few hours to catch our breath, explain people how to slackline on the ground and do some tricklining before we had to go up for our second show. It went even better and we were enjoying the reactions of the crowd a bit more. We followed up our first two shows by a great party in the evening, only to come back on Sunday morning for some more highlining. During the time of our fourth and last show, the Dutch team was playing in the world championship of soccer. We had no spectators and decided to watch the match ourselves and celebrate a close win over Mexico! All in all we had a great experience but still need to practice more to beat soccer in popularity!
