Ropeswing de tijd van je leven Blavet

Ropeswing – de tijd van je leven

by Jonas Konijnenberg

In May 2015 we were asked by a Dutch TV produce house to set a ropeswing for a short item about a girl. Her dream was to do once a ropeswing and walk a highline. As we had experience with both, they decided that we were allowed to fix the ropeswing and highline for her. This means that we had our first job where we were asked to fix something for someone else! The ropeswing wasn’t meant for us, but of course for the girl. This was one of our first opportunities to make a real dream become reality 🙂 The show is called “De tijd van je leven”, which means: the time of your life.

First day

Finally. We arrived at the spot at about 10 in the morning on the first day. Dropping off 125kg of gear at a newly agreed meeting point after which we went looking for the anchors. Three days of rigging, testing and derigging in the 32 degree sun were ahead of us, and we were stoked.
Quickly we found the anchors of the short highline and the ropeswing highline. The short highline was 28 meters long and easy to rig. The ropeswing highline was about 85 meters long, and 15 meters (!) off leveled. Quite bit harder to rig and the most important line, so we started on that one.
Everything went smoothly and we established the big line in about 5 hours, after which we took a small break in the shade to cool off and energize ourselves to rig the smaller line. We didn’t rig the ropeswing on the 85m line yet, because we were pretty sure we had enough time to give the big line a try the next morning. Also the small line was done within no-time (except for a little throwline-error ;)), and at around 18:00 we went back to the hotel after a successful day of rigging. Tomorrow walking time!

Second day

I sat on the lower part of the big line. It was a weird experience, being in the beginning of a line, and bending your neck just to see the anchor. As soon as I stood up my eyes went straight ahead and I just focused on the line. After a couple of steps I fell. Back into chongo, and.. Wow, the line was already going up! Chongo would get harder and harder! Just don’t fall smile-emoticon
At about half the line I fell again. Chongo was hard, but still doable. Reaching the end was a weird experience. It was so steep, that I almost slipped backwards. Since the line wasn’t very tensioned yet, it was about to hit the rocks, so I just went down. After some bouncy fun in the middle, we decided it was time to rig the ropeswing. We would still have to test it, and the next day was d-day!
I went to the middle of the line to do some improvisatory rigging. With some prussiks and tape to keep everything in place it was all fixed and ready to go. I brought the ropes back to the side, Jonas made an 80kg haulbag full of stones ready to be thrown off the cliff, and then it was time. The first test. Tom and I were keeping an eye on the anchors, which I tried to blindly film the fall of the haulbag.
“3… 2… 1… Komt ‘ie!”. The haulbag fell, and… There was barely any sound. The anchors didn’t move an inch, and the haulbag was slowly swinging 35 meters below the line. Success! Getting the haulbag back up took us quite a lot of time, considering it doesn’t have any arms to keep the ropes from twisting. Therefore it was already late when we got everything ready for the next jump, so we decided to let only Jonas jump the next day before Karen would be the lucky one.

Third and last day

We went to the lines at 9:30 in the morning on the last day to do some final checks before the filmcrew arrived. Everything was ready. Even though everything was 200% safe and thought through, we were still a bit nervous. But… Better nervous than careless!
At 11:30 the filmcrew arrived and the show got started. After some funny fake “meetings” it was time to get started. Jonas would jump first. I was by his side, encouraging him. 3, 2, 1, JUMP!!! Without any doubt he threw himself in the abyss. A few seconds later; a dull sound of the ropes catching him as smoothly as possible. A few high pitched man screams later, Tom and I were hauling him back up, and after arriving back to the middle of the line, he pulled himself to safety. Then the moment we’ve been waiting for. Karen was going to jump!
Tom was waiting at the top anchor to go on the line to get Karen off, Jonas at the bottom to pull her up, and me by her side, tieing her into the ropes. The ropes were ready, the filmcrew was ready, and Karen was ready. We would do a countdown from five, she was sure about jumping, and not even breaking a sweat. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, JUMP!!!
And there she went. No hesitation. Fully trusting our judgment. 30 minutes later we got her back on the side, and after some necessary ‘reaction filming’ it was done. Everything went so smoothly!
No more highline for Karen, since they had to go to the airport to catch their flight. We said our goodbyes, as soon as the TV crew left we hugged each other and we were so proud of ourselfs.
Three days of hard work all came together in that one, single jump. All the preparations were totally worth it, as everything in the Jump of Karen went without problems. We were also really happy with the fact that we made a real dream come true; Karen had an awesome experience with the ropeswing and we had made this possible 🙂

We started derigging. I looked on my phone and… A message from our good friend Guillaume: “I’ll see you in 5 minutes!”. And there he was, 5 minutes later! After all the small highline wasn’t rigged for nothing. He went to have a quick session on it while we derigged the big line, and after that also the small line. 125Kg of gear back in all the backpacks, and we were ready to go home!
PS: Thanks Guillaume for all the great work you did in getting permission for us and finding the spot!

We expect the video of the programm soon to be published. For now we just have the session video of Yuri!

Istanbul highline trip

In a small car crammed with camping gear, two heavy weight highline rigs and space for 2 people. There were five of us. Things got interesting. Real interesting. Pretty much a masterclass in Tetris multiplied by Twister. We wound our way out of Istanbul at 10pm to camp at the highline spot. The best thing about arriving at midnight is that the beauty of the rocks and landscape will refreshingly welcome you the next morning when you wake up after a great night of sleep. The morning sun painted the rocks and landscape, filling in the blanks left by descriptions and photos I had already seen.

DSC_0002

This is the beautiful gap that Can had so excitingly told me about. It would be approximately 135 meters he said, and we would rig it with dragon and 10,5mm rope backup. During breakfast I couldn’t keep my eyes off the gap, while the others were slowly preparing. I was ready. I was excited. Too excited! STOKE!!!

IMG_0673

We brought the webbing (ever so kindly sponsored by our friend Sinan!) in between the two rock faces, Nuri and I walked up on one side, made the anchor (all natural) threw a rope down and attatched the first end of the webbing. Then Can bravely walked the webbing to the other side of the river (while keeping it dry!!) and we did the same for the other side. Everything went flawlessly (except for forgetting to put the leash on the line. Standard practice) and we were done rigging within 3,5 hours! It was time for some lunch, to get ready for some long heavy goodness!

DSC_0005

We knew the wind would make it pretty hard, but didn’t expect the how much and powerfully the gusts would vary. I got up on the beginning of the line and a gust blew the line 5 meters sideways. I stood up, put a few steps, and the wind stopped for a moment. The line went all the way back and I lost my focus. I caught. This happened a few times and I also tried in the middle. I couldn’t hear anything around me except for rapidly blowing wind. It was a hugely powerful feeling. I slid to the other side and back to get some protection off the line that was necessary during the rigging (thanks for your sweater Nuri 🙂 ) and was drained. Tomorrow I will try again…

DSC_0075

When I got on the line the next day, I quickly noticed that it was saggier than yesterday and rather unleveled (later we found out the base camp-side was about 5m higher). Combined with the sag, and brand new dragon webbing the first 20 meters felt really strange. My shakes didn’t really reach the end due to the sag, but every step felt like I missed a step on some stairs. It was a lot lower than I was used to. I walked the first 20 meters on my first try, and got across with a few catches. This was the same for the way back. The incline and slipperiness were both pretty severe, so the last 5 meters I kind of had to shove my feet forward instead of actually walking. So far it went well! I made three more crossings and called it a day. Tomorrow I will try again…

DSC_0027

The next day I wanted to try it with a bit more tension. I put one hangover on, and Nuri tensioned it as much as he could, while of course sitting in a really awkward position. With about 8-10m of sag left, I went on the line. I stood up, went in to a surf, catch. Repeat. And again. I got frustrated. I decided just to push through (is what you always should do). I stood up and walked the first 40m. It was ok, the next part should be a lot easier now. I stood up and walked the rest of the line without catches. It was quite the fight, but it felt good! Time to try for the return send. A few catches with not more than 2 steps. I closed my eyes and focused. Don’t get angry, don’t get angry, just focus, I repeatedly told myself. I stood up, and walked the first 50 meters. I took a misstep and fell. I got really angry, but said to myself “then walk it with just 1 catch”. It didn’t work and I walked the rest of the line with about 3 catches. I got mad (as usual) and pushed too hard. When I got to the end I forced out a smile and looked at the camera. You know, because the team shirt is that cool.

And here’s my forced smile:

DSC_0185

I got off the line, and they congratulated me. I didn’t accept it because I didn’t send it. Then they said, “but you got across with one catch!”. One catch? Oh yeah, one catch. I got so obsessed with sending it on the way back, that I totally forgot that the way there was just with one catch. I cheered up a bit, and was thinking about going again. Unfortunately I was way too drained for another good try, so I slid to the middle of the line, and bounced the living shit out of it 🙂

Video coming soon!! 🙂

That morning just before we went up the cliff, the waiter of the camping restaurant gave us a huge banner, and he politely asked us if we could maybe hang this on the highline for a quick picture. Of course, the Dutchie that I am, I asked: “in exchange for?”. About this he was kind of vague, and said something like “free beer or dinner or something”. To derig the line, Nuri had to get to the other side, so he took the banner with him, we made a cool picture, and derigged the line. With the huge profits we could afford a couple beers and food, a delicious sell out 😛

Belgium Dreams and Disappointments

www.martinwatters.comAfter having some great experiences in Belgium with highlining recently, we decided to try and repeat one of the most beautiful urban lines in Belgium. Already established by BeSlackers, 40 meters long and 40 meters high between two old mine cranes, it would be a great way to enjoy a beautiful view over the Belgium landscape. Some online ninja work by Florian Beyer was needed to find the exact location, before we could really start planning. The night before, Jens and Flo from Germany arrived in Tilburg to join us on this mission. Leaving at 7am, all that was standing in between walking the line was a two and a half hour drive and an easy rig, or so we thought…

Arriving on the scene, the cranes looked incredibly huge and strong from a distance. We decided to go take a closer look, but none of us expected what we found. After climbing a five meter high ladder, there was a set of stairs running up completely along the internal tower up till the highest point. In theory, the best and safest way to get to a highline, but in reality there was danger all around. The crane was completely rusted through, and entire sections of stairs had fallen down completely. The plates to stand on had giant holes in them, many steps were missing and some others would have fallen down in case we had stepped on them. Climbing up on the beams also wouldn’t have been an option, since beams the size of my upper leg rusted through and disappeared.

After checking out both sides and discussing with the group for about three hours, we could not find a safe way to make it to the top of the cranes. In case of stairs, steps or beams breaking we could not only fall down ourselves, but also drop huge, heavy pieces of metal onto our friends below us. Often we get called daredevils or risk takers for what we do, but safety for ourselves and our environment is the most important standard in our sport. Highlining is our biggest passion, but when you get faced with these challenges you have to stay realistic and make the right choice. Deciding to walk away from what would have been a beautiful project is probably even more difficult than walking the line itself. If it can’t be done in a safe, responsible way it’s just not worth it.

To deal with this disappointment, we decided to eat a huge amount of Belgian fries. It was during this potato feast that we came with a new idea: One of us had spotted some old abandoned buildings close-by and we all felt like doing some urban exploring. After walking around a bit, Jonas and me decided to enter an old office to wander around. We made it to the dusty attic and when we looked through one of the small windows we saw a super obvious highline waiting to be established. We shortly checked through the room for anchor points, and there were plenty of solid wooden beams to anchor from. It took some time to access the other side of the building, but eventually we found a way in and spotted bomber anchor points as well.

We had to make a quick decision, whether to go home without doing anything, or establishing a really small new highline between these abandoned buildings. It didn’t take us long to decide we needed to do this to get our spirits high again, but also because establishing any new line is fun for me. It’s a great feeling to be in a space that no one has been in before. Walking a line for the first time also gives you a unique view of the scenery you are in, from an angle that no one has looked at it before. It would also be disappointing for the guys from Kassel to drive 600 kilometers just to look at two rusty cranes. After knocking out some windows and making a small plan, we were ready to start rigging finally!

50 meters of static rope provided for a safe, redundant anchor on one side, while Jonas equalized a few beams in the attic on the other side. We decided to skip the tensioning process, because at this length it just isn’t necessary. There’s something really calm in walking a highline without tension, and I am curious to find out what the limitations in length are for this type of highlines. We all walked the line both ways on the first try, and played around for a while before we decided to take it down. Funny thing is that while standing in exposure, you had a perfect look over the two old cranes towering out of the landscape.

This project wasn’t about a mental or physical challenge on the line, but more about redemption for some of the disappointments you have to deal with as a highliner. I’ve never spotted a line, to be standing on it an hour later. Seeing a project in such a location and realizing it immediately gives a different kind of satisfaction than getting a new personal record. In the end, the Kassel boys continued their trip to beautiful Freyr, while the Dreamwalkers started preparing for another project in the early morning next day, which turned out to be the Morning Glory line.

100m Highline ‘Feuilles d’Automne’

Published in blog, Highline, Projects
by Jonas Konijnenberg

By Yuri Rhodenborgh

The idea: a line we definitely couldn’t walk, somewhere around the Gueuroz bridge in southern Switzerland. What could be better training?

It’s always strange to drive right up to the spot where you will be highlining, because you normally need to hike for a long time with a heavy backpack. Guillaume, Remy and I got arrived at the bridge by car and went over our plan. We had already discussed that we would try to rig the longest line possible under the bridge, so we used Sam’s 105m Core2LS piece, and laid it out along the bridge, to tape it together with Remy’s Sonic 2.0 and checked the length of our project. 100m. Not a meter shorter. Perfect!

Immediately we started rigging. Everyone knew what to do. That’s the best thing about highlining with experienced people. Everything goes ten times faster! After some fun bridge climbing and mini-rig-ropeswing it was rigged. I had just installed the backup on the far-side and went out to highslide to the other side, where Guillaume, Remy and the leash were, to get ready for some heavy, loose highlining. I clipped in with my HangOver and gave the line a big tug, which shot me forward, out over the abyss. The moment I passed over the relative safety of the trees, a gap of 150m of direct exposure opened beneath me. It was unlike anything I had ever felt before. It definitely did not look this exposed from beside the line! I took a moment to enjoy the view, and then went over to the other side.

Guillaume went out first, and I think he had the same experience as I did. ‘Let’s check my knot once again’, he said, with a nervous smile. Then he stood up, and walked. The line was so calm, as were his movements. He got to the other side and back in no time. It looked incredible! He said it was way easier then he expected and above all… totally sendable! Being a natural skeptic, I went on the line without expecting too much from it. I stood up, and strangely enough, the line was incredibly controllable! I walked until halfway with a few catches , and then to the end without any catches. It WAS possible!

Guillaume was the first one to send it on his fourth crossing. Immediately after him I sent it on my second crossing, and after that Remy also on his fourth. We sat there, staring at the barely tensioned line (50-100kg of tension, at least 2m of sag without anyone on it) in disbelief. Did everyone really just send this line like it was nothing? At that moment the sun broke though (spoiler: corniness on the way) and some autumn leaves drifted past on the wind. Guillaume decided to name the line after this moment ‘Feuilles d’Automne’ which means literally ‘Autumn Leaves’ in English. An unforgettable moment in time. A big thanks to Remy, Guillaume, and Sam for making this all happen (so smoothly)!

405m World Record Longline

Published in blog, Longline, Projects
by Tom Peek

Text by Yuri
“I stared in the distance. The far, far point of the end in the distance. It was too far away to even think about walking this thing, this line, this beast completely, so I just stared down for a minute. Getting ready. A deep breath, and I stood up.”

The idea

August. I have been traveling from country to country, highline to highline, friend to friend. Philipp Gesing told me about this project he wanted to do. A LONG one. 440m long to be exact and he said he even had the perfect spot. The webbing he would get from GAMBIT-slacklines, the pulley system rope from slackliner.de, and all this would take place at the end of October. It all sounded a bit silly, since my longest line so far was not even half of that (211m) and I was nowhere near ready for a line this big, mentally or physically. Stubborn me, I started training two weeks after my holiday ended (14th of September). One month to go!

The training

Longlining is all about endurance, mentally as well as physically, controlling the weight of the line you’re walking. The heavier the line, the stronger the vibrations will be, and the heavier it will be on the core. Thus, long heavy lines can drain LOTS of energy very quickly, if you fight with the line too much. You really need to relax and not allow the vibrations to develop in the first place. The 440m would be just over 25kg so I decided to completely focus my training on this number. To assure myself of success, I decided I needed to walk a line which was at least 3kg heavier, so I asked Jonas to use his 150m piece of heavy Black & White to double up with mine. Once I had this, it was time to train heavy!

155m double Black & White (Slacktivity, 178g/m): 27.6kg

Being 10kg heavier than the heaviest line I ever tried, I thought I had no chance. Weirdly enough I walked until 30 meters before the end without falling during the first session, which gave me a lot of hope for actually having a chance at the 440m. The thing with lines like these and a flat ground without natural dip, is that you have to hang them very high (4-4,5m) to actually make them comparable to a single line with the same weight. This means, when you fall near the ends, you absolutely HAVE to catch the line, otherwise there is a big chance of breaking yourself, as I nearly did just at the start of my training. Near the end of my second session I came close to crossing the line. I was about three meters away from the ground, feeling very loose, and trusting my catching skills absolutely. I lost balance, reached for the line with my left hand and… I missed. For one endless second I was weightless in the air. I didn’t really know what was happening, but it felt great. Then I landed on the right side of my back, and I couldn’t breathe anymore. I was rolling around like this for about 10 seconds. People were standing around me, asking if they should call the ambulance. Luckily my friend Annelies came quickly running from the other side of the line, and told the people it was ok. I lay on my back for a few minutes and besides being a bit stiff, everything was fine. I guess this was a fair warning that I’m a bit more vulnerable then I realized.
After about six of these two to four hour sessions I finally sent the line fully without falling. Training was far from done, though, so time for the next step… 185m double! Since I already wrote a blog about this line, I won’t bore you with the details, but just post the link here; http://www.dreamwalkers.nl/longline-training-double-185m/

One week to go

Endurance: 60m double Core2HS
One week before the record attempt, I still had to train my endurance. After all, I would need about 30 minutes of walking to cross the line, in my estimation. So I put on 1kg weights on both my wrists, and had three sessions of one long, continuous 500m walk along the 60m line. Feeling far from ready (besides, I didn’t stand on a single strand line for over 2 months, oops), I left Holland and started my hitchhiking.

One day left

Philipp and I decided to set up a training line before we would actually rig the beast the following day. 335m of single line (finally some single line training). Even though we had a great 9:1 pulley system with an MPD as brake, having only two people to rig this line was a bit ambitious. After pulling in about 150m of rope, with just one meter of pulley system left, the line was far from completely tensioned. The natural dip was about 8-9m, however at this low tension there would have needed to be an additional 3m of sag for the line to be walkable all the way. Luckily it was possible to walk to a third and after a few attempts I managed to do this pretty smoothly without falling, but this was still a LOT shorter than the actual line… The line was very powerful and I was completely drained after walking about 200m of the line in total. I began to lose hope for the line the next day.
Just before we left we checked out the 440m spot. Since it was not such a good spot, and we’d have to be at least 5m in the tree on one side, we decided we would go a bit shorter, and we found the perfect spot for: 405m, ~4m natural sag, 3m high anchor on one side, and 4m on the other side.

Record attempt day

Since there was seven people, it was a lot easier to tension the lines. Hari (Helmut Netzwerker) and I started to set up the 405m line, and the others worked on a 280m nylon line. First we tensioned the 280 with everyone, and then went over to the 405m polyester line to make it walkable. I was getting a bit nervous. What if I had no chance at all? Would all my hard work have been for nothing?
Almost ready, we let the line relax a bit and had a quick lunch, because the last thing we would want is to hit the ground after walking 300m of the line. However, I just needed to try the line, I was too nervous to wait. I think Hari noticed this, because within one minute he was there to help me tension. Quickly it was done, and I immediately got onto the line. I stared in the distance. The far, far point of the end in the distance. It was too far away to even think about walking this thing, this line, this beast completely, so I just stared down for a minute. Getting ready. A deep breath, and I stood up.

The Walk

To my surprise, the line didn’t do anything, and I was completely calm. I started walking quicker and quicker. It was like it was walking on a 20 meter line. Why was it so still? Was the hard part about to hit me and throw me off? I didn’t have any music on, so I heard the people talking. “Man, is he going to onsight it?”, after walking 100m of the line flawlessly in the first 5 minutes. “Shut up” was my reaction (sorry Dan). I couldn’t think about sending. Sooner or later I would make a misstep, that was one thing I knew for sure.

Halfway. Everything had gone smoothly so far, but now the fight began. The first time I gave a shake to the line. I wasn’t ready for the super delayed oscillations that a huge line like this would produce. My body reacted too quickly, which meant I only shook the line more. For about half a minute I was standing in one position, fighting the line, not thinking about going any further. I shouted as loud as I could, and at that moment my muscles relaxed and slowly but steadily the shakes stopped and I continued walking.
So far I’ve only been looking down, not more than 10 meters in front of me. I quickly glanced up to see how far I’d come. It felt like I would never reach the end. About 200m to go, more than 500 perfect steps in front of me. It seemed impossible.

The last quarter. I felt everyone staring at me in my back. I still didn’t think I would make it. The last 50 meters quickly went up to 4 meters of the ground, and usually I have a really hard time with the end. I wasn’t too nervous. After all, I wouldn’t make it all the way to the end anyways, but it was a good try, right? Closer, 20 meters away from the end. Still no fight, the line got easier and easier. Wait… Can I really make this? The last 10 meters it struck me; I can actually walk this line! The line started vibrating rapidly under my feet, I stood on one leg, fought, regained myself, and started to almost run. 5 meters to go, I heard people yelling, but I wasn’t there yet. 3… 2… 1… I screamed. I had made it!

Morning Glory

Location: Undisclosed Time: 6.30 – 8.30 Line name: Morning glory Length of the line: 23m Text by Jonas In summer Tom and I spotted this location and we thought: ‘Wow, this is a perfect location to set a highline!’ But, the location was quite a tourist hotspot and the police are pretty strict in this area. So we decided to postpone this awesome project to a moment where we were really motivated to start rigging early. Peter Soetewey made these beautiful pictures. In summer Tom and I spotted this location and thought: ‘Wow, this is a perfect location to set a highline!’ But, the location was quite a tourist hotspot and the police are pretty strict in this area. So we decided to postpone this awesome project to a moment where we were really motivated to start rigging early. So, some months went by until…

The evening before the project Tom, David and I were discussing the plan. Yuri couldn’t make it unfortunately, due to his study. We decided to start rigging early and go away before the day was started, because we didn’t want to be sent away.

At six o clock in the morning my alarm went off. So, so early for a Sunday morning! I woke up the rest of the guys (not easy) and we went to the spot. We had already divided up the gear for each side into separate backpacks and pretaped the line so we we able to rig really fast. We were almost finished within 30 minutes, but David spotted a misaligned shackle. It was difficult to realign, because there was already a bit of tension on the line. At that moment our mission was in danger, de-tensioning meant we almost had to start over again. But with all of us, a hangover and a linegrip we were able to release the tension of the shackle and placed it correctly 🙂

When the sun rose I had the honour of the first attempt. I stood up and immediately felt super confident on the line. The walk towards the other side was short, but I enjoyed every moment! Halfway I started to smile, because I realised that we fulfilled our mission of the morning. Getting up so early with a dreamy mission is a really nice start of your Sunday. Especially when you’re already dreaming a couple of months about a project!

Tom and David also had an awesome time on the line. David was walking so solid in his green flashy leggings. But when he walked back on his second full man a harbour boat sailed really close by. We realised that we were being spotted, took all the gear within 5 minutes down. We drove happily away and to a nice café for breakfast. When we arrived we high fived each other and went eating Sunday morning breakfast with croissants!

Urban Highline in Amsterdam

Urban Highline in Amsterdam
In July 2014 Dream Walkers athletes Tom Peek and Jonas Konijnenberg established a new highline in the Netherlands, Amsterdam. The lines were set up between two formal offices. They were named after the street name where the buildings are placed combined with their length.
Wild-35 and Wild-55Report underneath by Tom Peek
When Jonas told me he had a friend living in an old office building that was perfect to rig highlines from, my eyes got bigger and we instantly drove over to the place to check it out. At the first sight, I got excited immediately! The place had opportunities for lines between 35 and 60 meters, and the lines were not visible from any surrounding roads. It wasn’t until 2 months later that we finally had time to return, but it was worth the wait. Rigging is a total cruise there, as you can just walk to the pillars on the roof on both sides and make an easy connection on the street underneath. We decided to rig the shortest possible length, which was 35 meters, with double Redtube from Slacktivity. After a lazy tensioning attempt with a linegrip and hangover, I decided to go and try the line.I didn’t prepare myself much mentally as I thought 35 meters would be an easy cruise, even at such low tension. After standing up and taking the first two steps I found myself shaking more than I was used to. The whole walk, I couldn’t really relax and get comfortable. On the other side I took a few minutes to inspect the rig again, catch my breath and focus a bit more. The way back however, was not any easier. Even though I could walk the line both ways on my first try without getting close to falling, it wasn’t easy. Jonas also struggled a bit, and needed a few tries before finally sending. We came to the conclusion that the Redtube is the hardest webbing to walk on that we have tried so far. The shakes are really violent, heavy and powerful. Even the slightest mistake can throw you off. Not what I was expecting at this length, but it’s nice to be challenged even on the shorter lines!
We decided to play around a bit more on the line, but take it fairly easy and come back the next day to rig the bigger line. We were a bit limited in length due to the piece of webbing we had available, but we still managed to put up a 55 meter highline on double Bluewing perpendicular to the shorter one. The rigging again went super fast, and I found myself really eager to leash in on the longest highline ever rigged in the Netherlands. I put on my favorite highline song in my ears, Anthem by Emancipator, scooted out and stood up. It was surprisingly easy and I walked to the other side without any problems. Without taking time to catch my breath I instantly went back on the line to walk to the other side. It was such an easy line compared to the shorter one, and I took all my time to enjoy it. Unfortunately, I was the only one able to send the longer line. Jonas gave it some good tries but didn’t get any further than a third of the line. The second day, the shorter line still remained as challenging as the first. We got company from a few Amsterdam slackliners that had their first tries on highlines and they all pushed the limits in their own way. Thanks to Steven, Soraya, Arno, Martin and Pim for keeping us company on the rooftops and making sure everything we did was done in the safest way possible! A special thank you goes out to Eelco, who opened up his house to us and allowed us to highline there.

Highline show @ RockSteady Bussum

During the break before the finals of the National Students Championships of Lead Climbing in 2013 the Dream Walkers performed a highline Show. Yuri, Tom and Jonas showed their skills on the highline that went totally across the climbing hall. Jonas and Tom showed some pretty hard moves on the line, like a buttbounce and loads of  static moves.
